What NOT To Say To A Disabled Person 😭😭

June 25, 2019

Last weekend, at an event for professional speakers, someone referred to my speech impediment as a "disability". 😭😭It really hurt me. BUT...

I'm not offended by the word "disability". It was the way this person tried to give me "tips" on how to get by, and how he made me feel as though I wasn't in control of my own body. And I have been trying to understand why it felt the way it did.

After all, many of my heroes (like Amy Purdy and R.J. Mitte) have physical challenges that have propelled them forward and given them opportunities beyond their wildest dreams.

Many of you have physical challenges (whether or not they relate to oral cancer) and I would love to get your feedback on how I could have empowered myself a bit better. I have a feeling that MANY of you will relate to the details of this story!
